A broken toe is caused by trauma (jammed toe) or injury. However, a hairline fracture or stress fracture to the toe can occur from prolonged repetitive movements. When a toe fracture occurs foot pain, swelling, stiffness, and bruising will occur. Complications can arise from a fracture of the toe such as a compound fracture, deformity, or infection.
When a toe fracture occurs the typical symptoms are as follows:
It’s common for trauma or stubbing of the toe to cause a broken toe. And, the location of the toes makes it the top part of the foot to become injured.
Furthermore, there are additional causes, such as:
Although many people believe a toe fracture does not need medical attention, that is wrong. In many cases, the toe needs to be put back into place, splinted, or put in a cast. On the other hand, when there is an open wound a tetanus shot is required. Surgical intervention is sometimes necessary.
Please note: It’s important to seek immediate medical attention if your toe fracture is open or if the toe appears deformed.
If you encounter a minor toe injury, you can probably just treat it at home. However, if you are unsure of the severity, you must seek medical attention. So, the following tips will help reduce pain and swelling from a broken toe:
REST: In order for your toe to heal properly, you must rest and avoid any strenuous exercise. However, crutches or a shoe boot are also a good thing to have for the maximum healing opportunity. This will help avoid putting weight on the injury too.
ICE: Ice is your friend. In order to bring down swelling, you must ice your injury 15-20 minutes every couple of hours. Placing a towel on the skin is ideal before placing ice to protect the skin. Out of ice or a bag? Frozen peas or corn are more good options.
ELEVATION: The foot must be kept above the heart to reduce pain and swelling. Do this as often as possible. You can use several pillows under your foot to achieve this.
Some situations require medical attention, please see a specialist for more information.
