There are 26 bones in the foot. The bones in the foot (26 bones) support our weight and allow us to walk and run. Certain activities or injuries though can cause a foot fracture or break. There are many bones this can occur in.
There are two types of foot fractures: stress fractures and bone fractures. Stress fractures usually occur in the bones of the forefoot. These bones extend one toe to the middle of the foot. However, are quite common in the metatarsal bones.
A break can happen after physical activities, such as:
- Sudden increases in exercise
- Improper training techniques
- A change in surfaces
A metatarsal stress fracture may not become apparent on x-rays until a few weeks after the injury.
Bone fractures typically result from trauma, such as dropping a heavy object on your foot, or from a twisting injury. A closed fracture, is a bone break that does not break through the skin. And an open fracure occurs when bone breaks through the skin.

- Sharp pain in the forefoot

Foot fracture treatment
Your foot and ankle doctor will inquire about your injury and medical history. Next, a thorough physical examination of your foot will be done. Then, an X-ray and/or another imaging test will be done to determine severity.
Depending on the severity of the foot fracture; rest, icing, and immobilization will be required. Some broken bones in the foot can be treated with crutches and flat-bottom shoes. While others, however, may require splints or casts. Surgery could be also necasarry to repair and/or realign any part of the bone that has moved.
