Summer Shoe Types that Can Cause Injury
The summer months are famously popular not only for the good times that come with them – swimming, hiking, enjoying the beach – but also for that transition away from winter fashion. However, in Florida, we don’t get too much winter. Some say that it’s summer here almost all year long! Choosing the right shoes should be not only about fashion but also comfort and safety. A sprained ankle will definitely set your poolside time back a little.
1. Flip-Flops
Most of us in South Florida have a pair of these – they’re easy to use, low-maintenance and cheap. But flip-flops come with dangers, mostly due to their minimal support, making it easy to damage your lower back. These can serve as a good choice for short trips or visits to the sandy beach, but for longer journeys in the sunshine, you may want to choose something with a little more cushion.
2. Mules
What are mules you may wonder? Mules are those shoes that you can slip on. However, they have no back, making these shoes a trip hazard. Over time, this also puts you at risk for hammertoe due to their backless designs. Try to shop around for certain brands and styles that are a better fit and offer more support.
3. Wedges and Espadrilles
Ladies, we get it; wedges are fun and flirty, but let’s be honest, those low heels can hurt. Standing on wedges and espadrilles for long periods can lead to middle foot pain due to the spread of pressure. Not only that but this type of heel offers no side foot support, putting you at risk of twisting your ankle if your foot slips to the side. If you absolutely must wear wedge sandals, look for a pair with wider heels and rubber soles for more stability.
4. Peep-Toes
Nothing says summertime eveningwear quite like peep-toes, which are undeniably sexy and set off a summer dress just right. These shoes are notorious for their blister-causing and crowded feel. However, and even if it does look cute none of us want our toes squished. Not only is it uncomfortable and causes blisters but this also can cause painful bunions! Look for peep-toes with a more open tip, this will allow for more tootsie movement.
It’s always fun to experiment with new shoes, just keep those feet safe! If you experience foot pain after wearing uncomfortable shoes, first try the RICE method and switch your footwear ASAP!
